About Bags by U

About us!

Bags by U is an environmental sustainability youth organization. We educate families through zero waste sewing and craft events as well as presentations.
We sell beeswax wraps to raise funds for education and donate to local charities for the elimination of plastic in the Puget Sound and Salish sea.

Plastic Facts
The average amount of time each plastic bag is used is only 15 minutes.

Over one trillion plastic shopping bags are used each year.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch has over 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic.

One reused cloth bag can replace more than 700 plastic bags.

One person using reusable bags over their lifetime can remove 22,000 plastic bags from our environment.

There are only 75  resident orcas left in the Puget Sound.

100,000 marine animals and one million seabirds die from being entangled in plastic each year.

Directions:
1. Get your use mesh fabric (scrap fabrics from stores or old clothing).
2. You can used a sewing machine or you can hand sew.
3. Cut the fabric 12 x 24 inches using scissors, a rotary cutter and ruler, or measuring tape on a cutting mat.

5. Sew the pinned edges with a straight stitch.
6. Fold the material in half with the top seams facing outward. Pin both the right and left sides about 1/4th inch over from the edge.

9. Sew the 20'' recycled ribbon to the left or right side approximately an inch from the top of the bag and use forward and backward stich to secure it.
10. You're done!

TIP: You can use this same method to make a reusable bulk food bag. Just be sure to use cloth or scrap fabric instead of mesh and you can alter the size for your purposes.
